Real-World Challenges

Fresca-2 Cryostat

In the framework of the High Field Magnet activities, a new FRESCA2 test station (Facility for Reception of Superconducting Cables 2) was designed and fabricated at CERN to measure superconducting cables in background magnetic fields.

Current leads for HL-LHC cold powering systems

Current leads transfer thousands of amperes to the superconducting cable from room temperature down to 1.9 K. The design allows the flow of current while minimising the heat load into the cryostat. A large series of 157 current leads has been produced at CERN main workshop

FUSILLO Curved-Canted-Cosine-Theta (CCCT) Dipole magnet formers

This small radius magnet is expected to be used in the new storage ring for HIE-ISOLDE and might be developed for other applications such as hadron therapy. The  curved aluminium formers are made by gluing 3 pre-machined segments and then completing the milling of the groove for the superconducting cable. This sequence was conceived to make the fabrication feasible.
